What are the Different Political Parties? As a democratic nation, America has numerous political parties. Having access to more than one political party allows America to have a checks and balance system due to the multiple party system preventing one party from possessing all of the power. The political parties of America produce presidential candidates, organize the government and keep the public informed. The two main parties of America are the Democratic Party and then Republican Party. While third parties such as the Libertarian and the Constitution Party exist, these parties are not as prominent as the two main parties and are usually outvoted in national elections. Because of this, this website chooses to focus on the two main political parties of America.
The Democratic Party is a predominantly liberal party. The Democratic Party favors government control of the economy but prefers the government not to control social issues. The majority of the Democratic Party supports the government setting the minimum wage, LGBTQ marriage, higher taxes for those with higher incomes and predominantly support abortions being legal. They also support universal health care provided by the government, favor moderate and supportive immigration policies and cutbacks on military spending. The Republican Party is a predominantly conservative party. The Republican Party favors the government controlling social issues while having little government control of the economy. The majority of the Republican Party supports business setting their own minimum wages, is against increased taxes for anyone, supports abortion being made illegal and opposes gay marriage. They also favor increased spendings for the military, oppose universal health care in favor of the health care offered by companies, and favors harsher immigration policies. What is the political spectrum and where do you lie? |
Merely affiliating yourself with a political party does not make up a person's entire political identity. For example, a Democrat can have liberal views on the economy but a conservative stance on immigration or foreign policy. Our website has linked several tests below. Take one or all three to determine where on the political spectrum you stand. Please note that these tests were not created by us.
